Recently visited @thespotteddog8 in Dunmow for the latest Sunday lunch review and it didn’t disappoint! Despite being super busy and short-staffed, the staff were absolutely lovely—attentive, informative, and made sure we felt looked after.

I went for the pork roast, which was fantastic. The apple sauce came without asking (a nice touch!), the meat was perfectly cooked, and the Yorkshire puddings were lovely. The veg served with it was delicious too, though different from the veggie roast, which included red cabbage. My group tried the chicken and vegetarian meatless roasts, and everyone left happy.

We also indulged in desserts as part of the £26 two-course menu—the triple chocolate brownie, deconstructed carrot cake, and sticky toffee pudding were all delicious! 🍮

If you’re in Dunmow, it’s worth a visit.

Would I go back? Absolutely! Big thumbs up.

After refuelling, take a short 10-minute drive to the historic Oxburgh Hall, a stunning National Trust property. 🏰 Home to the Bedingfeld family for over 500 years, the hall has witnessed centuries of trials and triumphs. A fab little find close to @buckinghampalace_official today after a visit to the fantastic state rooms. The Phoenix was a perfect spot for the London heat. Porchetta and the roast beef were the chosen meats both with pour your own gravy. A tasty Yorkshire, some solid vegetables and a decently cooked meal. All in all a solid choice for a last minute walk in. The gravy could have been a little thicker and the roast pots could have had more crunch but overall very tasty. 🍽️ 4/5👍

From the beautiful cathedral city of Ely, this delightful roast was served in a boat themed pub, @thecutterinn_ely on the waterfront surrounded by families of ducklings and boating odds and ends. The roast was perfectly proportioned with tasty parsnips, extra gravy and an excellent homemade veggie pie featuring sweet potato and maybeeeeee cumin?!?! The veggie seal of approval 🍽️4/5. Also the service was lovely.

Finished off with a lovely historic venture into the 17th century of Oliver Cromwells Ely home, where you can learn all about the civil war that led to the downfall of Charles I. Also how his son posthumously avenged his father.

If you ever find yourself on the way to Duxford for the Imperial War Museum, and have a hankering for history, potatoes, carrots and....caves. Then stop by the Fox and Duck in Therfield for a delightful roast dinner. Vegetarian/ vegan options available! There was plenty on the plate to enjoy as well as side veg and tasty/crispy/soft roast potatoes. Booking advised. Then when you are finished take a 5 minute drive to Royston and see a manmade cave built on lay lines, where the historical details are vague, but the tales are tantalising. Possibly used by the Knights Templar. Roast 🍽️ 3.75/5

A delicious roast awaits at @hitw_wilbraham. The Hole in the Wall in Little Wilbraham, a lovely spot that recently snagged the 2023/24 Good Food Award's Blue Ribbon! 🏆🍽. Nestled in the heart of Cambridgeshire, The Hole in the Wall has been serving the community from its charming 16th-century, Grade II-listed building for around 500 years, making deep roots in the village.

On the menu, this past Sunday was:
- Succulent slices of turkey, pork, and beef, each perfectly seasoned and cooked.
- Crispy, golden roast potatoes that are a crunchy delight on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
- Steamed broccoli, a hearty mix of carrot and swede and cauliflower cheese as standard.
- A homemade Yorkshire pudding, airy, crisp and thick in texture
- A savoury stuffing ball and a sausage wrapped in bacon, enhancing every forkful.
- Extra gravy in its own boat, perfect for drizzling.

At £23 for a selection of all meats, its cost was on par with prices around the area.

This was a fab Sunday Roast, the service matched the quality of the food, with attentive and warm staff. I fully recommend a visit, but do book! 4/5🍽️

The latest Sunday lunch review comes from @eastwellmanor, a historic Kent estate with a legacy that spans over 450 years.

Priced usually at £35 for a three-course affair, but I had a bought a deal with @Travelzoo that cost only £25. Kentish roast beef was the choice and the meal included an array of sides including red cabbage, roast parsnips, cabbage, broccoli, roast potatoes, and a generous Yorkshire pudding that perfectly complemented the succulent beef.

Before diving into the main course, I kicked off with a creamy and delightful cauliflower starter and for dessert, I indulged in a chocolate and Grand Marnier marquis that was a favourite for my sweet tooth.

While the meal was certainly tasty and filling, there was nothing out of the ordinary to report upon. However, sometimes all you need is a hearty and satisfying meal, and this Sunday lunch delivered just that. The dining experience was elevated by the lovely ambiance of the room with its rustic charm and beautiful ornate fireplace that paid homage to its rich history. The attentive staff added to the overall pleasant experience, and they even fulfilled my request for apple and mint sauce on the side.

In summary, Eastwell Manor offered a lovely Sunday roast dinner, earning a solid 4/5 rating. While it may not have been the most adventurous it delivered a satisfying and well-rounded meal that perfectly suited the traditional setting and ambiance of this historic establishment.

At the Fountain Bar in Edinburgh for a New Year's Eve roast!

There was a generous helping of meat, nice thick cuts and a good mix of medium rare and crispier bits. The carrots and parsnips were fairly standard, cooked as they should be.

The roast potatoes were hot hot hot! Crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and left me wanting more, two is merely company, three would have been a potato based party on a plate. All things considered though the portion size was an ample sufficiency.

The Cauliflower cheese was a welcome and novel addition to a Sunday roast, something encountered rarely and maybe something a Sunday roast purist may find such an unorthodox accompaniment challenging.

For me, the star of the show was the rich tasting gravy which had a good depth of flavour, perfect viscosity and a velvety mouth feel. The Yorkshire pudding acted as a perfect conduit to soak up every last drop on the plate.

If I were to offer any constructive criticism it would be to consider the addition of a green veg to add a touch more colour & pep up the plate, perhaps some peas/cabbage.

Last sunday I had the chance to enjoy a roast at The Grove, a stunning estate set in 300 acres of Hertfordshire's rolling countryside. The Grove is a five-star hotel and the former home of the Earls of Clarendon which combines luxury and history beautifully (as you can see)!

For the roast, I chose the leg of lamb with mint sauce, accompanied by home-roasted seasonal garden vegetables, rosemary and garlic duck fat roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, and red wine gravy. The meal overall was decent. The lamb was well-prepared, and the mint sauce added a nice, refreshing touch. The sides were tasty and everything was lovely.
However, what made the visit memorable, aside from the gorgeous setting, was the exceptional service. The staff were attentive and made the dining experience fantastic!
The overall experience was lifted by the great service and the stunning surroundings of The Grove.
Rating it a 🍽️4/5 for an overall delightful experience.

Flashback to earlier this year! At The Layer Fox in Layer de la Haye, where I discovered a place where time-honored tradition meets modern charm. This 16th-century pub, with its ancient beams and contemporary country décor was a great find.

I chose a spectacular roast beef, cooked to perfection and accompanied by roasted carrots and parsnips, and a delightful side of boiled cabbage and swede.

As well as the delicious roast dinner, the crowning glory was the dessert – both the sumptuous chocolate brownie and the sorbet was chosen and this was elegantly adorned with hardened chocolate decoration, which was delicious. This sweet finale was a treat that was tasty and visually stunning, elevating the entire experience. 🍫🍨

The meal was a harmonious blend of classic flavors, deserving a strong 4.5/5 rating. There was no food left on my plate by the end🥰.

Earlier in the day I visited the majestic @layermarneytower, England’s tallest Tudor Gatehouse on a private tour. Standing in the Essex landscape, the tower commands impressive views to the River Blackwater and it was a pleasure to visit.

We were a late day walk in and although the place was busy, we managed to get a seat. The meal was a true highlight, the meat was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The star alongside? A giant Yorkshire pudding that was so delicious.

The sides were a medley of crispy roast potatoes, rich stuffing, sweetly roasted carrots, tender cabbage, and golden parsnips. And those crackling flakes? Just the right crunch to elevate every bite. Tying it all together was the thick, rich gravy!

Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at Browns Bluewater for their much-talked-about roast. The main act? A well-prepared salted slow-cooked pork belly, accompanied by a delightful apple sauce, aromatic apricot and thyme stuffing, and the all-important crackling.

An interesting note, our Yorkshire puddings were a special guest on our plate, as they usually only accompany the beef dish. So we ordered them on the side and I had to ask for a bit more of the tasty red wine gravy as there really wasn't enough!

However the meal was tasty, while nothing on the plate screamed 'extraordinary,' the overall experience was pleasant and fulfilling... and of course my meal concluded with a chocolate brownie, a sweet end to a satisfying meal.

In all, Browns offered a solid 🍽️ 4/5 experience for a Sunday roast. It's a spot I'd recommend for those seeking a reliable and enjoyable meal, served up in a charming and enjoyable atmosphere.

Just a few weeks ago, I enjoyed a delightful lunch at The Horseshoes in Upshire near Epping Forest.

This charming country pub, accessible from Waltham Cross, Waltham Abbey, Loughton, and Harlow, served up a lovely Sunday lunch that hit the spot. While it was on the higher end at £28, the mixed meat meal included a medley of sides – mixed veggies, stuffing, rich gravy, carrots, green beans, broccoli, and cabbage.

The only downside was a longer wait due to a large table in this small pub, but it was tasty and an nice place to visit.

At the Cross Keys in Milton Keynes, I recently had the opportunity to try their Mixed Roast to Share, priced at £37.50. Without a booking we were directed to the bar area, which worked just fine to order the meal at the bar but without the dedicated waiter service.

This hearty feast included a slice of each: beef strip loin, slow-cooked lamb, and pork belly. It was served alongside roasted potatoes, homemade Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables, cauliflower cheese, honey and whole grain mustard pigs in blankets, and a rich gravy.

The presentation of the meal was impressive, with a wide variety of meats and sides laid out like a culinary work of art. However, when it came to taste, it was a bit underwhelming. While everything was decent, I had hoped for more flavour. The potential was there, but despite this, it's still a meal worth trying for the experience of a platter for 2 and the variety it offers. Rating 🍽 3/5

A fantastic day in Kent today that included a visit of Leeds Castle and a roast dinner at The Windmill in Hollingbourne.

I was treated to a roast dinner that had some highlights. The roast potatoes were the star of the meal, perfectly crispy and fluffy. The swede crush impressed with its flavorful taste, the real winner, however, was the gravy. Rich, flavorful, and irresistibly good, it enhanced the entire dish and brought all the elements together. While the meat and the yorkies didn't steal the show, the combination of outstanding roast potatoes, tasty swede crush, and delectable gravy made for a satisfying roast dinner experience. 🍽️ 3.5/5

For those interested in the castle. Leeds Castle is a captivating historical gem, with a unique connection to both Olive, Lady Baillie, and the iconic King Henry VIII. Lady Baillie, an American socialite owned the castle and dedicated her fortune to its restoration. She transformed Leeds Castle into the must-visit destination you see now. Additionally, Leeds Castle holds a historical significance as King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, enjoyed romantic retreats within its walls. With its rich history and royal associations, Leeds Castle offers a lovely experience for visitors.
