Peckforton Castle: A Historic Landmark in the Heart of Cheshire

Peckforton Castle sits proudly in the heart of Cheshire’s countryside. This historic landmark dates back to the 19th century. In fact, John Tollemache, the largest landowner in Cheshire at the time, commissioned the construction between 1844 and 1850. Today, the castle stands as a remarkable example of Victorian architecture and engineering.

The Creation of Peckforton Castle

Dean and Son of Leftwich constructed the castle using stone from a nearby quarry, just a mile away. Renowned architect Anthony Salvin designed the structure, aiming to create a family home rather than a fortress. Although the design includes medieval-inspired features like a gatehouse and dry moat, Salvin ensured the castle provided a sense of comfort rather than defence.

From Private Home to Luxury Hotel

Over the years, Peckforton Castle has evolved into a luxury hotel. Now, guests can experience a blend of history and modern comforts, dining in the grand hall and enjoying luxurious rooms. As a result, the hotel offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy a delicious Sunday lunch in this historic setting.

A Memorable Sunday Lunch Experience at Peckforton Castle

During my visit, I had the pleasure of sampling the Sunday lunch menu. I opted for the two-course option, which costs £22.50. For my main, I selected the roast pork, which came with roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing, and seasonal vegetables. The dish truly stood out. Moreover, the Yorkshire pudding was the highlight of the meal. Its texture and flavour were absolutely perfect, making it my favourite part of the lunch. Though small, it was cooked to perfection, delivering a satisfying crunch with a soft interior. Despite the absence of green vegetables, the portion size and presentation were excellent.

Exploring Beeston Castle Before Your Roast

Before diving into the hearty meal at Peckforton, I decided to explore Beeston Castle. Located less than 10 minutes away by car, Beeston Castle offers breathtaking views of Cheshire’s countryside. This short trip added an extra layer of historical discovery to my day.

A Glimpse into Beeston Castle's History

Ranulf de Blondeville, the 6th Earl of Chester, constructed Beeston Castle in the 1220s. After his death, Henry III took ownership of the castle. In 1646, Parliament ordered the destruction of the castle to prevent it from falling into Royalist hands during the English Civil War. Nevertheless, English Heritage now manages the site, preserving its Grade I listed walls. According to legend, Richard II’s royal treasure is hidden somewhere in the castle. Although many have searched, no treasure has been found.

I highly recommend taking a stroll up the steep hill to the top of Beeston Castle. The views are definitely worth the climb and provide a wonderful prelude to your Sunday roast!

Peckforton Castle: A Taste of the Past

While Peckforton Castle may not be as old as other historical landmarks, but it offers a unique blend of history and luxury. The castle provides a wonderful setting for a traditional Sunday roast, with its beautiful Victorian architecture and welcoming atmosphere. My experience was thoroughly enjoyable, and I would happily rate it a 4/5.
